There were a few years in my life, not all that long ago, when I went around calling myself a Bookshop owner. I had a lovely place called Zeeba Books in the burbs of Montreal. It was cute but too small to thrive as a business. Just mentioning that so you know why I post book related items from time to time. One of our sites, The Bookshop Blog was started up while sitting at the cash at said shop. We posted an article tonight about keeping your bookshop organized – which got me to come across these oddball book sections…

Ernie Els has not earned his way into The Masters this year and although he is in the Golf Hall of Fame and has won multiple Majors he won’t be playing in the year’s most prestigous event unless he gets a special exemption. What do you think? Should Mr. Els be invited to the masters. Personally – I do. I’ve always loved The Big Easy, not just for his game but also for the way he represents the sport.

From The Golf Writers:

One player that is not currently eligible to compete for that title on golf’s biggest stage is South African legend Ernie Els. A Hall of Famer, Els has won two US Opens, an Open Championship, and has been one of the elite players on Tour for a period of nearly two decades. His nickname “The Big Easy” instantly registers in the minds of golf fans, and his calm demeanor on the course makes him an easy guy to root for. Unfortunately for him, his game has fallen on hard times ever since his election to the Hall of Fame last year, and he is not currently invited to the Masters as a result. continued here…

The Big Desk is evolving yet again. I’ve had this site for a while now and seem to keep changing its focus. I’ve decided to use The Big Desk for myself – a place to share things found on the net, to talk about things that are important to me and also to talk about internet publishing. My publishing business continues to grow. I now run a nice little family of 6 sites. Once upon a time I had about 80 sites but they were just thin storefronts for various things. These thin sites (meaning they didn’t offer anything of value to the web community in general) have been dropped and I’ve only kept the sites that I feel offer something. Information is my game, I don’t sell anything on any of my sites. By the way – if you ever have comments or questions on any of the sites, don’t be shy. I’ve learned a fair amount on how to successfully run a multi-author website. And – if you’re a good writer and are interested in joining one of the sites, I’m sure we could find room for you.

It can be tough at times, always searching for new writers (looking for a Hurricanes writer right now) but when a new guy comes along and submits a post like this I get pretty excited. He did a great job, strong topic, linkable and some nice video.

An enforcer in hockey is defined as a player whose role on a team is to respond physically and aggressively to unwarranted play by the opponents, usually by challenging the guilty parties or the other teams’ enforcers to a fight. An on-ice policeman, as you will.

Many enforcers also stage fights between one another to attempt to change the momentum of a game by energizing their teammates and fans.

These players generally have little or no offensive ability and are utilized strictly for their tenacity and policing abilities. There are, however, a few exceptions to that statement…[read the full story...]

One of the few things more enjoyable than sipping a fine red wine is doing so with a friend.

I dropped by my friend Dean’s place tonight – just to drop off a key. We end up chatting and sharing a bottle of wine. A very nice Amarone. We were talking about the usual things: his daughter’s recovery from a recent surgery (it went well), home renovations, painting, hockey – we always talk hockey, and then I mentioned my man-crush on George Clooney. I’m guessing that in days gone by guys might have thought that Cary Grant was the king of the hill when it came to charm, wit and elegance. Well today we have George Clooney. I can’t think of somebody that is easier to like. I’ll pencil him in very close to the top of my list of gentlemen that I would love to share a bottle of wine with. Here’s a little video of Mr. Clooney – just because.

Just 7km from Citdnia de Briteiros is the original capital of Portugal and Azores Islands, Guimaraes. As the huge sign in the centre of the town proudly announces, Portugal was born here, and it was born even more precisely in the medieval castle that still stands on a hill to the northwest of the city.

The castle itself is simple but marvellously evocative of its history. Its round bailey and huge central keep seem to rise out of the rock that in places does indeed form part of its fabric. The simplicity of the medieval castle, designed above all for safety from attack, is a reminder of how harsh life was for even the most noble at this time.

However, there are signs in the stones that jut out of the bailey wall and once supported a floor and in the window seats that this was at times a place of relative luxury. In front of the castle is to be found the remarkable twelfth century church of St Michael. It is a beautifully simple single nave Romanesque structure. It contains within it the font in which the young Dom Afonso was said to have been baptised by the Bishop of Braga. There is also a ninth century statue of St Michael and a twelfth century crucifix. The main use to which the church was put, however, was as a burial place for knights who had died on the Crusades. On the walls there are crosses of the crusaders and in the main part of the church forty two knights are buried.

In 1095 the King of Leon and Castile, Afonso IV, granted to his son-in-law, Henry of Burgundy, the County of Portucale. Henry then erected the seven towers around the central tower and installed his wife and court within. The tower had been built after an invasion of Normans in 996 by a local noblewoman, Mumadona.

It was here that in 1110 the founder of the Portuguese nation, Afonso Henriques was born. He succeeded his father in 1112. As his mother, Teresa, acting as regent, was meddling in the affairs of her half-sister’s kingdom of Galicia, and having an affair with a Galician nobleman; Afonso eventually rebelled against her regency and defeated her in battle at the nearby village of Sao Mamede in 1128.

From that time on Afonso worked constantly at the expansion and consolidation of his kingdom. His most glorious moment was at the battle of Ourique, when he decisively defeated the Moors in 1139. From that time on he was known as the King of Portugal. This was recognised by his cousin, Alfonso VII of Castile, in 1143. Four years later he had captured Lisbon from the Moors. There were many English Crusaders whose help was enlisted by Afonso against the Infidel, and one of these, Stephen of Hastings, stayed in Portugal and eventually became Lisbon’s first archbishop. Afonso continued to fight the Moors throughout the remainder of his life at innumerable battles. The Portuguese are enormously proud of their nation’s founder and are to be seen having their photograph taken at the foot of his impressive statue near the castle every day.

Fishing offers the ability to get away from the cares of the world. For avid anglers out there, there is no better place to get away to than Alaska. Alaska is one of the most desired fishing destinations in the world, and for good reason. There are hundreds of miles of coastline to explore, and hundreds of backcountry rivers, streams, lakes, and ponds to cast your line into. Alaska is truly the ‘last frontier’ of fishing.

When planning Alaskan fishing trips, it is important to remember a few tips. The first important tip is to decide which type of fishing you will be doing, and try to stick with it for the entire trip. This will help keep you in one location and avoid wasting time and money on extra travel arrangements. If this is not possible, then try to stay in one general area. If you want to do some deep sea fishing, this is easy. You just need to pick one of the many coastal cities and towns to travel to. If you want to do some backcountry fly fishing, you will need to think carefully on the different destinations available. Remember that Alaska is a huge state, and it will take time to get to the more remote destinations.

Once you have a general idea on where you want to go, you will need to find the proper accommodations, like lodging, restaurants, guide and charter services and other amenities. To help you find the best options, read some online reviews. This will help you to see what other anglers thought of the specific options. Once you narrow down your search based on good reviews, you will need to compare prices. If you are looking for the best deals, use the Internet or a trusted travel agency.

Plan your next Alaska fishing vacation today!
