Some history of Ubon Ratchathani, a popular city in Thailand

Ubon Ratchathani is a popular city and is the eastern border of Thailand. Hosting Isaan traditions and culture in the form of Temples, monuments and sculptural innovations, Ubon is a place loved by most people. While Thailand is famous for bubbling beaches and green environment, people who want to take a break from beaches and forests can enjoy a great time here, exploring the architectural marvel and elegance of heritage Khmer sites.

Though Ubon Ratchathani is popular for several reasons, it is interesting to know the history of the city and province. Ubon was founded in the early 18th century by Thao Kham Pung who was also the first ruler of this area. Ubon was formed while the Thao Kham Pung was fleeing from King Siribunsan of Veintiane. Ubon Ratchathani became a province in 1792 and from then has become an important part of Thailand. Ubon was under the influence of Northeaster Monthon who has supervised this region during 1899 and later. This is another reason why this region is referred to as Isaan and showcases the artwork and culture of Isaan.

Another important element of Ubon Ratchathani history is the Japanese influence during the Second World War. Ubon people have helped them a lot during the II world war which is why we see a Monument of Merit erected in remembrance of kindness shown by Ubon people. In the later years, Ubon has experienced flow of culture from Vietnam and western countries. However, even today, Ubon displays an elegant Isaan heritage and culture.

The actual meaning of Ubon Ratchathani is Royal Lotus City which aptly describes the elegance and royal charm of the city in a simple phrase. Right through the history we see that the people of Ubon Ratchathani are keen on maintaining the Isaan heritage and culture even during the modernization period which is why we get to see the architectural marvels everywhere.
